It was formed as International Union for
Protection of Nature(IUPN) in 5th October 1948 with headquarters at Gland,
Switzerland.
The organization works on the natural conservation & the sustainable use of natural resources. It has a global membership of over 1400 governmental & nongovernmental organizations, volunteered by thousands of scientists worldwide. In 1956 IUPN renamed to IUCN.
There are 6 commissions under IUCN ;-
1.Species Survival Commission of IUCN publishes Red Data Book. 1st published on 1964. It demarcate the conservation status of the species worldwide.
2.Commission on Ecosystem Management(CEM).
They work on natural & modified ecosystems.
3.Commission on Education & Communication(CEC), works on the management of natural & converted ecosystems.
4. Commission on Environmental, Economic & Social Policies(CEESP), works on the sustainable use of biodiversity.
5. World Commission on Environmental Law(WCEL), helps to make & maintain laws on ecosystems & sustainable development.
6. World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), which works on the network of marine & terrestrial protected areas. They have over 1300 members.
IUCN has an observer & consultant status in UN.
