Ramsar Convention


  It's an international treaty on wetlands conservation & its sustainable use. The treaty was established on 2nd February 1971 on the City of Ramsar, Iran by UNESCO. The treaty came into existence in 1975.
Ramsar Convention works closely with other international entities on nature conservation such as IUCN, WWF, Birdlife International, Wet-life International etc.
IUCN headquarters at Gland, Switzerland act as the Secretariat for Ramsar Convention. 2nd February every year observed as Works wetlands day in order to raise awareness among population about the importance of wetlands to the world. 1st celebrated in 1997.Currently there are more than 2200 Ramsar sites worldwide.
