National parks, Reserves & Gardens



India has 103 National Parks.
The most is with M Pradesh(9)-state, Andaman Nicobar(9)-U territory.
Country's biggest national park is at J&K, Hemis national park(3350 sqkm).
2nd is Desert National park(3162sqkm) at Rajasthan.
The smallest is South Button NPark(0.03sqkm), Andaman & Nicobar.
1st National Park of India- Corbett NPark (Uttarakhand) formed in 1936. It's also the 1st in Asia. Also named as Hailey NP, then in 1954 Ramganga NP, finally on 1955 Jim Corbett NP.
2nd National Park of India- Kanha NP (M.P.)
Only National park in U.P- Dudwa NP).
National Parks listed as World Heritage sites in India- Kanchenganga(Sikkim), Great Himalayan NP(H.P), Sundarbans- known for Bengal tigers( Weat Bengal), Nanda Devi(Uttarakhand), Kealadeo, Ghana(Rajasthan), Manas(Assom), Kaziranga- home of one-horned rhinoceros(Assom).
Dajikam National park (Kashmir) is the home of endangered Hamgul deers.
Bagwan mahavir national park(Molam)- Goa.
Gwindi NPark at Chennai.
Jaldapara Npark, W Bengal is the latest to be declared as NPark (2014).
Rajaji NPark, Uttarakhand.
Sanjay NPark - M Pradesh.
Sanjay Gandhi NPark- only NP in  urban area (Mumbai), Maharashtra.
Rathambore NPark- tiger reserve at M.P.
Asiatic Lion in India at Gir National Park, Gujarat. Due to population increase some of the lions being transfered to Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary, MP.
Inthanga NPark- Nagaland
King Cobra resides in Namdapha NP, Arunachal Pradesh.
536 Wildlife Sanctuaries in India(2016).
Andaman & Nicobar- 96, Maharashtra- 41.
Delhi's only WLS- Azola bhatti (indira priyadarshini).
Ozudhu lake, the only bird sanctuary in Puducherry.
Pitti bird sanctuary is the only WLS in Lakshadweep.
Periyar tiger reserve is the 1st WLS in Kerala formed in 1950. It's the largest in the state (925 sqkm).
Smallest WLS in the state is Mangalavanam(0.027 sqkm).
Neyyar, Peechi-Vazhani WLS (1958).
Indian Institute of Forest Management is at Bhopal.
Wildlife Institute of India, Forest Research Institute of India, Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy- Dehradoon.
Rain Forest Research Institute- Jorhut, Assom
Himalayan Forest Research Institute- Shimla.

-------------Biosphere reserves ---------------
India got 18 Biosphere reserves. 10 out of which is included in the UNESCOs  list of world network of biosphere reserves.
They're - Neelagiri, Gulf of Mannar, Sunderbans, Nanda Devi, Nokrek, Pachmarni, Simlipal, Great Nicobar, Achanak-Amarkand, Agasthyamala(2016).
India's 1st biosphere reserve- Neelagiri.
India's 1st biological park- Agasthyarkudam.
Listed in 1986 by UNESCO, the reserve lies on 3 states- Kerala, Tamil nadu, Karnataka. Eastern & Western Ghats meet at Neelagiri.
Thodar- The tribes society at the hills.
Largest biosphere reserve in India lies in Gujarat sector which includes Ran of Kuch area(2008).
As of 2017, 18 sectors in India were included in the biosphere reserve list.
Simpilal biosphere reserve at Odisha,
Nanda devi biosphere reserve at Uttarakhand & Panna biosphere reserve at M Pradesh.
Manas biosphere reserve at Assom.
Sunderbans (W Bengal) is the world's largest wetlands & a tiger reserve.
Tiger project started in 1973. In 2016, there 're 50 tiger reserves in the country.
India's largest tiger reserve- Rajeev Gandhi Tiger Reserve- (Nagarjuna Sagar Sri Sylam-AP).
India's smallest tiger reserve- Amangadh(U.P).
India's largest Birds sanctuary is at Bharatpur, Rajasthan. Kealadeo bird sanctuary, Ghana bird sanctuary.
Nokrek biosphere reserve is situated at Meghalaya which includes Nokrek National Gardens included in UNESCO biosphere reserve list(2009). The national park is famous for Red Panda.
India's largest botanical garden- Indian Botanical Garden, Kolkata.
