Vedic period (1500 BC- 500 BC)



Aryans arrived in India through Khyber pass (Hindukush mountains)
The holy book of Iran - Zend Avesta
Term Veda coined from 'Vid' means to know.
Early or rig vedic(1500 BC - 1000BC)
Later Vedic (1000 BC - 600 BC)
Aryavartha- indo-Aryans(Sanskrit).
Vedas divided into 4 by Vedavyasa- Rig, Yajur, Sama(1810 stothras), Atharva.
Vedas're called 'Prakruthy kavyam'.

Rig Veda ;---------
World's oldest literature. Formed b/w 1500-1200 BC. It was translated to English by Max Muller. Translation to Malayalam was done by Vallathol.
Gayathri Mantra, wrote by Viswamitra is on the 6th mandal of Rigveda. Keerthanas are called Samhitas.
Vashishta & Viswamitra were important leaders at the time. Aswamedham, Vajpeyam, Rajasooyam were the notable balikarmas.
The arrival of Aryans, their lifestyle are mentioned in Rig Veda. They 1st settled in Punjab, were called Bharathasar.

Yajur Veda ;----------
Describes about sacrifices & rituals.
'Tythiria Brahmanyum'.
The purohita who says yajurveda mantras called 'Adhvaryu'.
Dhanur Veda is a subtopic of Yajur Veda, which tells about weapon tactics & deity powers.

Sama Veda ;---------
Gantharva Veda is a subtopic of sama Veda.

Atharva Veda ;---------
Silpa Veda is a subveda.
Ayurveda is mentioned in Atharva.
The total no. of Upanishads- 108.
The no. of kandas in Ramayana- 7.

Iran was the 1st foreign nation to enter Northwest India through King Darius in 516 BC. Thus Kharosthi script evolved to India from Iran, written from right to left.
Kharosthi script has been used in Asoka's inscriptions.
