
Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is the
cooperation of southeastern Asian nations to promote unity & social,
cultural, economic, political, educational integrity among the member countries.
ASEAN was formed on 8th August 1967 as a result of Bangkok convention. Their
headquarters is at Jakarta, Indonesia.
History
Association
of South-East Asia (ASA) was the precursor of ASEAN. ASA was formed in 1961.
Shortly after, the delegates of five countries summit to form the new
association. The motive was to achieve fast economic development and also fear
of communism. The five founding
members were Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore & Thailand. The
first official summit was held at Bali in
1976.

Motto
‘One Vision,
One Identity, One Community’ is the motto of the organization. ASEAN summit is held twice a year according to ASEAN
Charter(2008). There are currently ten
members in the organization- Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore,
Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia.
ASEAN emblem bears four colors- blue, red, white &
yellow. Blue represents peace & stability. Red shows courage &
dynamism, white stands for purity & yellow for prosperity. The circle represents
the unity of ASEAN.
