South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation is the organization
formed on 8th December 1985 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is an intergovernmental organization
working on the regional integrity of South-Asian countries for the development
in various sectors. SAARC Secretariat is in Kathmandu,Nepal established in
1987.
Aim
SAARC provides a platform to the people of South-Asia to come &
work together over eleven sectors. Their Integrated Program of Action (IPA)
include cooperation in agriculture, rural development, telecommunications,
meteorology, health & population activities, transport, postal services,
scientific & technological cooperation, sports, arts & culture.
Members
Currently there are eight
members in the organization. They’re Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India,
Maldives, Nepal, Srilanka & Pakistan. Over the years Australia, USA, China,
European Union, South Korea, Myanmar, Mauritius, Iran & Japan have earned
observer status to SAARC.
SAFTA
South Asian free trade area
(SAFTA) is the mutual agreement among the SAARC nations to reduce custom duties
on their traded goods gradually to zero. In 12th SAARC summit at
Islamabad, Pakistan held in 2004 the seven foreign ministers came to the
agreement.
