International Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement

          
      IRC& RCM is an international humanitarian movement coordinated by various distinct organizations with the same goal of human health & life protection, alleviating or preventing human sufferings. Their headquarters is at Geneva, Switzerland.

Members

    The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) - a private humanitarian organization found in 1863 by Henry Dunant & Gustave Moynier.  

    The International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) -IFRC was found in 1919 & it globally co-ordinates the activities of National Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies. They were formerly known as ‘League of Red Cross Societies’.

    National Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies - Red Cross movements in individual countries which are co-ordinated by IFRC & recognized by ICRC. Currently 190 National societies are recognized by ICRC & admitted as full members of federation.

    The Red Cross emblem officially approved in Geneva in 1863. It is referred to as Greek or Hellenic Red Cross to avoid confusion with other similar symbols.

   The Red Crescent is the symbol officially recognized in 1929 & 33 Muslim states have recognized it. The symbol is derived from the flag of Ottoman empire.

   The Red Crystal accepted in 2005 as the 3rd protocol emblem of the movement.  The symbol is used by Israel’s national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance & blood bank services, Magen David Adome being a full member of IRC&RCM.
