World Heritage Sites of India

A Khajuraho Stone Art
Maharashtra
1)Ajantha caves & Ellora caves ;-
Both located at Aurangabad, Maharashtra is the largest of the ancient rock cave monuments featuring Buddhism, Jainism & Hinduism. Rock-cut temples, monasteries & sculptures are the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art.  It became a World Heritage Site in 1983.

2)Elephanta caves listed in world heritage sites in 1987. Rock cut temples depicting hindu beliefs are the peculiarities. It's situated on Elephanta islands, near Mumbai harbour.

3)Chhtrapathi Sivaji Terminus/Victoria Terminus (2004) is the headquarters of Central Railways. It was built to the concept of Victorian Italianate Gothic revival Architecture.

Utter Pradesh

1)Agra Fort (1983) was the residence of Mughal emperors & was built by Akbar in 1573. It houses numerous structures such as Jahangir Mahal, Sha Jahani Mahal, Diwan-I-Am, Moti Masjid etc.

2)Taj Mahal(1983) built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Built on white marble, it highlights Persian & Mughal architecture.

Odisha
Konark Sun temple(1984) is at Konark near Puri dedicated to Sun, the God. It's a classical example of Odisha style hindu temple architecture.

Tamil Nadu
1)Mahabalipuram Temples(1984) on the shore of Bay of Bengal made with stones.

2)Chola temples(1987) consists of Brihadiswara temple at Tanjavoor, Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple & Airawateswara Temple at Darasarum dedicated to Lord Siva.

Assam
Kaziranga & Manas wildlife(1985).
Kaziranga is the home to one horned rhinoceros. It is the home to large diverse species.
Manas is home to rare species like Assam roofed turtle, hispid hare, golden langur & pygmy hog.

Rajasthan
1)Keoladeo National Gardens(1985)- home to a variety of bird species, thousands of migratory waterfowls come visiting each year.

2)Jantar Mantar(2010)- Jantar Mantar at Jaipur is featured with 19 architectural astronomical instruments, featured by world’s largest stone sundial.

3)Hill Forts(2013) of Rajasthan includes Chittorgarh fort, Kumbhalgarh fort, Rathambore fort, Gagron fort, Amer fort & Jaisalmer fort.  

Goa
Churches & Convents(1986) are a set of religious monuments or churches in old Goa.

Karnataka
1)Memoirs at Hampi (1986) spread over 4100 hectares includes forts ,temples ,shrines, memorial & water structures, royal & sacred complexes etc. it’s the remnants of once great Vijayanagara Hindu Kingdom. 

2)Memoirs at Pattadakkal(1987) is a group of Hindu, Jain & Buddha monuments on northern Karnataka.

Madhya Pradesh
1)Khajuraho temples(1986) are dedicated to Hinduism & Jainism, famed for Nagara style architectural symbolism & erotic sculpture.

2)Buddha memoirs at Sanchi (1989) is the largest Buddhist monuments of monolithic pillars, temples, palaces ,monasteries etc.

3)Bhimbetka rock shelters (2003) include 7 hills & 750 rock shelters spread over 10 kms gives glimpses of human settlement & cultural evolutions through years. 

Delhi
1)Fathepur sikri(1986) is the city in Agra found by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1571. The attractions of the city are Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Panch Mahal etc.

2)Death tomb of Humayoon(1993) is the 1st garden tomb in Indian subcontinent located at Nizamuddin East.

3)Qutab Minar(1993) is a 73m tall tapering tower of 5 storeys, tallest minaret  in the world made of bricks. Qutab-Ud-Din-Aibak started its construction in 1192.

4)Red Fort (2007), historic fort which was the residence of Mughal emperors for 200 years, made of massive enclosing walls of Redstone. On august 15, the Indian independence day prime minister hoists Indian tricolor flag at the main gate of Red fort.

W.Bengal
Sundarbans National Gardens declared a World heritage site in 1987, has a dense mangrove forest is the largest reserve of Bengal tiger. It’s a residence several endangered species like gangetic dolphins, saltwater crocodile, hawksbill turtle, olive ridley turtle etc.  

Uttarakhand
1)Nanda Devi & Valley of flowers National Gardens (1988) located around the peak of Nanda Devi on western Himalayas. Spread across 87sqkms its known for the alpine shrubs & unique floral wealth.   

2)Mountain railways of India include Darjeeling Himalayan railway, Nilgiri Mountain railway & Kalka-Shimla railway spread over W.Bengal, Tamil Nadu & Himachal Pradesh. Collectively they’re declared as a World Heritage Site in 1999 by UNSECO.
