Antarctica



The continent has no permanent population.
Many countries claim part of the continent such as Argentina. Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, UK etc.
Nearly 4000 people visit the continent yearly. The continent is protected from activities such as mineral mining, military activities, nuclear waste disposal & testing by the Antarctica treaty of 1959.
Antarctica contains many research stations located across the continent run by many countries.

71% of the Earth is water.

Asia ;---------
Most populated continent on earth covering 9% of Earth's surface (30% of total land area).
Located mostly on Northern & Eastern hemispheres.
Home to 4.3 billion people. (60% of world population).
World's younger population- 50% is below 19 years of age.
Vastly diverse in terms of culture, environments, ethnic groups, economics, historic background & Govt systems.
Actually no geographical separation b/w Asia & Europe. The 2 continents form a large landmass called Eurasia.
East- Pacific, South- Indian Ocean, North - Artic.
The largest & smallest country in Indian subcontinent are India & Bhutan respectively.

Africa ;------------
2nd largest continent in size & population.(20% of world land area).
54 countries & 1 billion people (15% of world population).
Considered the birth place of mankind. Oldest fossils of Homosapiens were recovered from Eastern Africa.
Lies in the centre of earth with equator passing through the centre.
Only continent stretching from Northern to Southern Temperate Zones.
Largely Tropical climate.
Home to lot of endangered species.
North- Mediterranean, SE- Indian Ocean, West- Atlantic, NE- Suez canal & Red sea.
Madagascar & large number of archipelagos.

North America ;----------
3rd largest continent in the world entirely in the northern hemisphere.
Covers 16.5% of Earth land area, 4.8% of earth surface.
Home to 565 million people(7.5% of world population), 4th by population.
Most of the land dominated by Canada & USA, Greenland & Mexico. Many smaller states in Central America & Caribbean regions.
Rocky mountains called the backbone of North America.
North - Artic, East- Atlantic, SW- Pacific, SE- Caribbean sea.

South America ;------------
4th largest continent lying in Southern hemisphere.
Home to 3 billion people, 5th largest in population.Home to 12 sovereign & 2 non sovereign states.
Diverse geography & biodiversity.
Brazil- largest country.
East- highlands & lowlands
West- Andes mountains(known as the spine of South America).
Rivers- Parana, Amazon, Orinocos.
Worlds highest uninterrupted waterfall Angela falls is at Venezuela.
World's driest non-polar place, Atacama desert, Chile.
Amazon, largest rainforests on earth.
Variety of species of Anaconda, piranha, jaguar etc.
Most of the population on west or east coast.
West- Pacific, NE-Atlantic.

Antarctica(5th largest) ;-----------
The Southernmost continent with geographical South pole contained.
It comprises the westernmost peninsula of the giant Eurasian landmass.
Large number of glaciers surrounding the South pole.
98% of the continent covered with snow of 1.9 km thick.
The least populous continent on earth with less than 5000 residents. One of the most uninhabitable place on earth, home to very few plants & animal species.
The windiest place on the Earth.

Europe ;---------------
2nd smallest continent with 50 countries & 3rd most populated after Asia & Africa.
Covers 6.8 % of world total land area (2% of earth surface).
Russia largest(40% land area of Europe) & Vatican city smallest country.
Russia got territories in both Europe & Asia.
Europe divided from Asia by the watershed divides of Ural & Caucasus mountains, Ural river, Caspian sea, Black sea & the waterways connecting Black sea & Aegean sea.
North- Artic, West - Atlantic, South- Mediterranean sea, Black sea & connecting waterways on SE. The Gulf of stream keep northern Europe warmer.
Birthplace of Western culture, especially ancient Greece.
From early 15th century continent was predominant in global affairs.
B/w 16th to 20th century they were controlled by America, some part of Africa, Oceania, large majority of countries in Asia.
Western Europe, subjected to lot of radical cultural, economical & social changes brought by Industrial revolution which began in Great Britain.
Both world wars were concentrated around Europe. By 20th century it's predominance in world affairs declined.

The smallestcontinent.
6th largest in population also called island continent, lies in the Indo-Australian plate.
Surrounded by Indian & Pacific Oceans.
Rich in biodiversity.
Great Barrier Reef, largest Coral reef in the world extends over 2000 kms on the NE coast of Australia.
Mount Augustus- world's largest monolith.
The Great Victoria, largest desert in Australia.
12th largest economy in the world, one of the wealthiest.
Highest ranked in terms of provisions like quality of education, life, health, economic freedom, protection of political freedom & liberties.

Study of dessert is called as Eremology.
Sahara (91,00,000) at Africa is the largest desert in the world.
Thar desert is in India.
Kalahari (9,00,000 sqkm) Africa- is called fossil desert.
Patagonia (6,70,000sqkm)South America.
Atacama at South America (oldest desert on earth) is the driest desert on Earth.
Great Victoria (6,47,000 sqkm) Australia
Namib at Namibia(Africa).
Taklamakan desert in China.

Indian Mountains & Plateaus



Pamir Ranges situated approx. on centre of Asia. 
Ranges Called the roof of the world.
Hindukush, Suleiman,Himalayas, Kunlun, Altin, Arakanyoma emerge from Pamir ranges.

Northern Mountain Regions ;--------
1.) TransHimalayas(Northern)- Karakoram(Krishnagiri), Ladakh, Saskar ranges.
2.) Midrange- Poorvachal(Eastern Hill)- Khasi, Gharo & Jayantia hills(Meghalaya), Patkai-bum(Arunachal Pradesh), Lushai hills(Mizoram), Naga hills, Mizo hills & Tripura hills.
Patkai-bum-International boundary b/w Arunachal & Myanmar.
Mawsynram receiving highest rainfall in the world(Khasi hills, Meghalaya).
Chirapunchi(Sobra)is in Meghalaya.

3.) Himalayas, which got 3 parallels- Himadri(great), Himachal(lesser), Shivalik ranges.
Himadri is the backbone of Himalayas.It's major Peaks are M.Everest(Nepal), Kanchenjunga(Sikkim), Nanda Devi (Uttarakhand).

Himalayas lies b/w rivers Indus & Brahmaputra. It's Total length 2560 km & Breadth(240-320)km. Average height above MSL- 6000m.
Rock system are mainly Sedimentary.
Plate Tectonics theory associated with the origin of Himalayas.
Indo-Australian plate & Eurasian plate converged to form Himalayas.
Himalayas replaced Tethis sea.
Highest peak of Himalayas- Mount Everest 8869 m (Nepal). It was identified as the tallest peak in the world by Radhanath Sikthar.

Highest peak of Himalayas in india- Kangenjunga- 8595 m(Sikkim).
Highest peak of India -Godwin Austin (Mount K2) 8661 m(J&K) is situated in the Karakoram ranges.
The highest peak in the Ladakh range- Mt. Rakaposhi.
Siachen Glacier- length 70 km, altitude 5753 m, east of Karakoram ranges.

Aravalli Ranges ;--------
The oldest folded mountains in India. It extends NE to SW, about 800km b/w Delhi & Palanpur(Gujarat).
Major portion is at Rajasthan where it's highest peak Mount Gurusikhar is situated.
Mount Abu hill
station is at Aravalli.
Dilwara temple, a main pilgrim station.
Ajmeer- Muslim pilgrim centre.
Goranghat pass separate Gurusikhar from Mount Abu.

Vindhyan ranges ;--------
Sparates Northern India from Southern Mainland. It's highest point is 'the Sadh-Bhawna Shikhar'.
'Ramapithekus' human fossil was found in India at Sivalik mountain ranges.
Patkai ranges situated in Eastern India.

Satpura Ranges ;--------
Located parallel to Vindhyan ranges.
River Narmada flows b/w Vindhyan & Satpura ranges.

Western Ghats ;--------
Declared UNESCO's World Heritage Site in July 1st 2012(at St.Petersburg).
Spreads parallel to western coast at 1600km length from the mouth of Tapti river in North to Kanyakumari in South.
It passes through 6 states- Gujarat, (Sahyadri) Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, (Sahyaparvatham) Kerala & Tamil Nadu.
Highest peak in Western Ghat & Peninsular India- Anamudi(2695m).
The hills of Anamalai, Elamalai & Palani meet at Anamudi.
Kodaikanal hill station on Palani hills.
Western & Eastern Ghats meet at Nillagiri, Tamil Nadu.
Largest pass- Palghat pass.
Madhav Gadgill & Kasturirangan committees studied the Ghats.
Oommen V Oommen committee reviewed Kasturirangan report.

Eastern Ghats ;--------
Ranges stretching from Mahanadi valley to Nilagiri parallel to East Coast.
Highest peak- Jidhagada.

Peninsular Plateau is the largest physiographic division of India. The major mountains of Peninsular plateau are Aravalli, Western & Eastern Ghats.
Major plateaus are,
1. Malwa plateau- Spread across Rajasthan, Madhya P & Gujarat.
2. Deccan plateau- triangular shape, largest plateau in India.
Largest lava plateau in the world.
Thick horizontal lava sheets in NW Deccan plateau- Deccan Trap.
Deccan Trap area famous for cotton cultivation.
Pass known key to Deccan- Azirghat pass
3. ‎Chotanagpur Plateau- mineral house of India(Jharkhand, Bihar).
The plateau sprawls over part of W.Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, NE Andhra.
